Preparing Files and Graphics
We need the file in single page PDF format (with bleed ideally).
Below we will list out some common issues that result in project delays, and how to avoid these issues.
Common Issue 1: The file is the incorrect size
Example: you made some A5 flyers and now want to reuse the graphic for a pull up banner.
The flyers are 148x210mm and the banner is 600x1500mm, you will need to redesign the graphic for the banner. Sometimes you can get away with stretching the flyer to fit on the banner, but it is not ideal.
Tip: always set up a new file in your editing software with the exact print dimensions in mind.
Common Issue 2: The image resolution is low
Example: you pulled together images from facebook to use in your printed book.
Usually any image uploaded onto the web is compressed or “optimized for web”. This is because load time is often more important than the image quality. The resolution is usually not high enough for printing.
Because we deal with files all the time, we generally have an idea of what the correct PDF file size should be and can notify you before printing.
Tip: make sure you get access to the original file if you can.
Common Issue 3: No Bleed
Example: you want your printed poster to be exactly 400x200mm and you give us a 400x200mm file.
Paper start as rolls and then get cut into sheets and then cut into small sheets and then cut into even smaller sheets. Sometimes the paper is 1mm short or 1mm long.
Having 3mm of bleed (extension of the image on all sides or wastage) is industry standard. This prevent white borders without stretching the image and allows for precise finishing.
Tip: bleed needs to be set up from the start in the editing software but If it is just too complicate you can bypass the issue altogether with smart design choice.
